In 2019, the Global Forest Fund, in collaboration with the HSBC Water Programme, supported two projects in Malta

MRC Naxxar Middle School - The indigenous garden

Learning about Forests students identified an unused area of the school grounds upon which to establish a garden of indigenous trees and shrubs. The students were advised by an expert about the advantages of native plants species and which species were suitable to plant in their new garden. Fourteen species of native trees and shrubs were planted on the previously empty plot, creating a garden for the students to maintain and enjoy.

st. michael school - Mediterranean green spaces

Students at St. Michael School in Santa Venera transformed previously bare areas of their school grounds into Mediterranean plant gardens. They used 26 different species to create new green spaces for their school. On the advice of a local plant nursery, all of the species were either native to Malta or well-adapted to the arid Mediterranean climate. The students developed a sense of ownership over the project, and established fences to keep the plants from being damaged as they grow.
